Leukemia diagnosed in adulthood (any subtype, e.g., acute or chronic)
During active disease or treatment, medical records confirming a leukemia diagnosis or showing that treatment is ongoing are central. Oncology notes, lab reports, pathology findings, and treatment records from a hematologist or oncologist all document that the disease is active or that a treatment phase is underway.
For chronic lymphocytic leukemia or monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis at Rai Stage 0, records showing the staging determination and confirming the absence of symptoms support the 0% level. For symptomatic chronic lymphocytic leukemia at Rai Stage I through IV, records documenting both the stage and the presence of symptoms are relevant.
After treatment ends, the mandatory six-month VA examination will assess whether there has been a recurrence and what residual conditions remain. At that point, records and statements describing lasting effects of the leukemia or its treatment — such as fatigue, organ damage, or other measurable problems — help establish what residuals exist and how severe they are. Your own statements about how those residuals affect your daily activities and work can support the rating of each residual condition.
