7337
§ 4.114 Schedule of ratings—digestive system.

Anal itching (pruritus ani)

Persistent itching around the anus that may result from various causes including skin conditions or irritation.

What the rating means

VA rates pruritus ani under diagnostic code 7337. There are two possible ratings: 10% and 0%. The difference between them is whether you have bleeding or excoriation — meaning broken, scratched, or raw skin — along with the itching. If your condition includes bleeding or excoriation, VA assigns a 10% rating. If neither of those findings is present, the rating is 0%. Diagnostic code 7337 is not included in the group of digestive-system codes that must be combined into a single rating, so it may be evaluated separately from conditions rated under those other codes.

Evidence that helps

To support a 10% rating, your records need to show that the itching is accompanied by bleeding or excoriation. Medical records from a primary care provider, gastroenterologist, or dermatologist that document visible excoriation, skin breakdown, or bleeding in the anal area are directly relevant. A VA examination report that describes the physical condition of the skin at the time of the exam can also reflect these findings. If bleeding or excoriation has occurred between appointments, statements from you describing those episodes — including how often they happen and how they affect your daily activities — can help fill gaps left by clinical records. For a 0% rating, no additional findings beyond the itching itself need to be documented.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
