§ 4.88b Schedule of ratings—infectious diseases, immune disorders and nutritional deficiencies.

Bartonellosis (Oroya fever)

A bacterial infection transmitted by sandflies, causing fever and other systemic symptoms.

What the rating means

Bartonellosis (also called Oroya fever) is rated under the General Rating Formula for Infectious Diseases. While the disease is active, the rating is 100%. Once the active disease has resolved, the infection itself is rated at 0%. However, if the infection leaves behind residual disabilities — such as endocarditis or skin lesions — those conditions are rated separately under the body system they affect. For example, endocarditis would be rated under the cardiovascular system, and skin lesions would be rated under the skin. The overall rating you receive after recovery depends entirely on the nature and severity of those residuals, each evaluated under its own diagnostic code.

Evidence that helps

During the active phase of the disease, medical records confirming an active Bartonellosis infection — such as laboratory results, physician diagnoses, or hospitalization records — support the 100% rating. Once the disease resolves, evidence of residual conditions becomes central. For endocarditis, cardiology records, echocardiograms, and documentation of heart function help establish severity. For skin lesions, dermatology records and descriptions of size, number, and location are relevant. Statements from you or your treating providers describing how residual symptoms affect your daily activities and ability to work can help establish severity under the body system being rated. The specific evidence needed will depend on which residual condition is being evaluated and what that condition's rating criteria require.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
