5015
§ 4.71a Schedule of ratings—musculoskeletal system.

Benign bone tumor

A non-cancerous growth or tumor in the bone.

What the rating means

VA rates a benign bone tumor (diagnostic code 5015) by analogy to whichever condition in the rating schedule most closely matches the functional loss you actually have. The regulation does not assign a fixed percentage to the tumor itself. Instead, VA looks at what the tumor does to the affected bone or joint — such as limiting motion, causing ankylosis, or requiring surgical treatment including prosthetic joint replacement — and rates that resulting impairment under the appropriate diagnostic code. If a joint was replaced with a prosthesis, the prosthetic implant codes apply. If motion is limited or a joint is fused, the ankylosis or limitation-of-motion codes apply. The rating you receive depends entirely on the functional picture that emerges from those analogous codes, not from the diagnosis of benign tumor alone.

Evidence that helps

Because the rating is based on functional loss rather than the tumor diagnosis itself, the most helpful evidence is anything that documents what the tumor has done to how your bones and joints work. Imaging such as X-rays or MRI reports can show the location and size of the tumor and any bone involvement. Examination findings that measure range of motion, document ankylosis, or describe instability are directly tied to the criteria used in analogous codes. If a joint was surgically replaced, operative reports and records of your recovery period support the prosthetic implant rating levels. If motion is restricted, goniometric measurements taken during a VA or private examination capture the degree of limitation. Statements from you or people who know you describing difficulty with physical tasks at work or in daily life help show how the functional loss affects you in practice.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
