6062
§ 4.79 Schedule of ratings—eye.

Blindness in both eyes

Severe vision loss in both eyes, with only the ability to detect light.

What the rating means

Diagnostic code 6062 covers the condition described in the rating schedule as "no more than light perception in both eyes." There is one rating under this code: 100%. VA assigns this rating when both of your eyes have no more than light perception, meaning neither eye can detect anything beyond the presence or absence of light. Because both eyes must meet this threshold, the rating does not vary by which eye is dominant or nondominant. There are no lower percentages under this diagnostic code — the only possible rating is 100%.

Evidence that helps

To support a rating under this code, evidence needs to show that both eyes have no more than light perception. Medical records from an ophthalmologist or optometrist documenting visual acuity measurements in each eye are central to this. A VA or private eye examination that records the results of standard visual acuity testing — showing that each eye cannot perceive more than light — directly addresses the single criterion for this rating. Records noting the cause and history of the vision loss help establish the service connection, while statements from you or people who know you can describe how the loss of vision in both eyes affects your daily life and ability to work.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
