6016
§ 4.79 Schedule of ratings—eye.

Central nystagmus (involuntary eye movement)

Involuntary, repetitive eye movements caused by a problem in the brain or central nervous system.

What the rating means

VA rates central nystagmus under diagnostic code 6016 in the Schedule of Ratings for eye conditions. There is only one rating level for this condition: 10%. Because the regulation sets a single, fixed rating, VA does not divide the rating into higher or lower levels based on severity. If you have central nystagmus that is connected to your military service, 10% is the rating the schedule provides for this condition.

Evidence that helps

Because there is only one rating level, the key question is whether central nystagmus is present and service-connected, not how severe it is. Medical records that document a diagnosis of central nystagmus from an eye doctor or neurologist are central to this. A VA or private examination that confirms involuntary eye movement and identifies it as central in origin supports the diagnosis. Imaging or specialist notes that distinguish central nystagmus from other types of nystagmus can also be helpful. Statements from you or people who know you describing how the eye movement affects your vision, balance, or daily activities may support the overall claim, though the rating itself does not vary with severity under this diagnostic code.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
