6511
§ 4.97 Schedule of ratings—respiratory system.

Chronic ethmoid sinusitis

Persistent inflammation of the ethmoid sinuses located between the eyes.

What the rating means

Chronic ethmoid sinusitis is rated under diagnostic code 6511, using the General Rating Formula for Sinusitis, which also covers other sinus conditions under codes 6510 through 6514. Four ratings are possible: 50%, 30%, 10%, and 0%.

A 50% rating applies if you had radical surgery followed by chronic osteomyelitis, or if you have near-constant sinusitis with headaches, pain and tenderness of the affected sinus, and purulent discharge or crusting after repeated surgeries. A 30% rating applies if you have three or more incapacitating episodes per year requiring prolonged antibiotic treatment lasting four to six weeks, or more than six non-incapacitating episodes per year with headaches, pain, and purulent discharge or crusting. A 10% rating applies if you have one or two incapacitating episodes per year requiring that same prolonged antibiotic treatment, or three to six non-incapacitating episodes per year with those same symptoms. A 0% rating applies when the condition is detected by X-ray only. An incapacitating episode is one that requires bed rest and treatment by a physician.

Evidence that helps

The type of evidence that helps depends on which rating level applies to you. For a 50% rating, records showing radical surgery, a diagnosis of chronic osteomyelitis, or documentation of repeated surgeries alongside ongoing headaches, pain, tenderness, and purulent discharge or crusting would be relevant. For a 30% or 10% rating, the key evidence is the frequency and severity of your episodes. Medical records showing how many times per year you were treated, whether each episode required bed rest and physician care, how long antibiotic courses lasted, and whether symptoms included headaches, pain, and purulent discharge or crusting all bear directly on the criteria.

Your own statements, and statements from people who live with you, can document how often episodes occur, whether they kept you in bed, and how symptoms affect your daily life and work. Imaging records, operative reports, and treatment histories from any VA or non-VA provider help establish the full picture of your condition over time.

Secondary conditions
