7347
§ 4.114 Schedule of ratings—digestive system.

Chronic pancreatitis

Long-term inflammation of the pancreas causing ongoing digestive problems and abdominal pain.

What the rating means

Chronic pancreatitis is rated under diagnostic code 7347. Three ratings are possible: 30%, 60%, and 100%. What separates each level is how often your pain episodes occur, how severe they are, and what kind of treatment they require.

A 30% rating applies when you have at least one episode of abdominal or mid-back pain per year that requires ongoing outpatient medical treatment for pain, digestive problems, or management of related complications such as a cyst, pseudocyst, intestinal obstruction, or ascites. A 60% rating applies when you have three or more episodes per year and at least one episode per year requires hospitalization to manage complications of the pain or complications of tube enteral feeding. A 100% rating applies when your pain is daily, you need three or more hospitalizations per year, a physician manages your pain, and you have maldigestion and malabsorption that require both dietary restriction and pancreatic enzyme supplementation.

If pancreatitis also causes diabetes due to pancreatic insufficiency, that condition is rated separately under diagnostic code 7913. Note that VA will not combine this rating with ratings for certain other digestive conditions; instead, VA assigns a single rating under whichever code best reflects the overall disability.

Evidence that helps

Medical records that confirm abdominal or mid-back pain results specifically from pancreatitis are required — appropriate diagnostic studies must establish this connection. Without that confirmation, the rating criteria cannot be applied.

For a 30% rating, records showing at least one episode per year with documented outpatient visits for pain, digestive problems, or treatment of a related complication would be relevant. For a 60% rating, records showing three or more pain episodes per year and at least one hospitalization per year for pain complications or tube feeding complications would support that level. For a 100% rating, records showing daily pain episodes, three or more hospitalizations per year, a physician's documented pain management plan, and records of a diagnosis of maldigestion and malabsorption with prescribed dietary restrictions and pancreatic enzyme supplementation would be relevant.

Your own statements, and statements from people who know you, describing how often pain episodes occur, how long they last, and how they affect your ability to work and manage daily activities can also help show the frequency and severity of your condition.
