§ 4.87a Schedule of ratings—other sense organs.

Complete loss of sense of smell

Total inability to detect odors or scents.

What the rating means

Complete loss of the sense of smell is rated under Diagnostic Code 6275 in VA's schedule of ratings for other sense organs. There is one rating for this condition: 10%. Because there is only one rating level, VA does not distinguish between degrees of smell loss under this code — the regulation covers complete loss only. If your sense of smell is completely gone, that is the condition this code addresses, and the single rating that applies is 10%.

Evidence that helps

To support a rating under this code, evidence needs to show that your sense of smell is completely absent. Medical records documenting a diagnosis of anosmia (complete loss of smell) are central to this. Results from smell-testing evaluations performed by a physician or specialist can directly confirm the complete absence of smell function. Notes from VA or private medical examinations that describe your inability to detect any odors are also relevant. Statements from you describing your complete inability to smell in daily life — such as being unable to detect smoke, food, or other odors — can help support the medical findings. Because the regulation covers only complete loss, evidence showing partial loss would not meet the criteria for this code.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
