5052
§ 4.71a Schedule of ratings—musculoskeletal system.

Elbow replacement

Surgical replacement of the elbow joint with an artificial implant.

What the rating means

Elbow replacement (prosthesis) is rated under diagnostic code 5052. The rating applies when you have had a total prosthetic replacement of the elbow joint. VA distinguishes between your major arm (your dominant side) and your minor arm (your non-dominant side), and the ratings differ accordingly.

For the first year after the prosthesis is implanted, the rating is 100% for both the major and minor arm. That one-year period starts after the one-month total rating VA assigns following your hospital discharge under § 4.30. After the first year, if you have chronic residuals of severe painful motion or weakness in the affected arm, the rating is 50% for the major arm and 40% for the minor arm. If your residuals fall somewhere between severe and minimal, VA rates them by analogy to diagnostic codes 5205 through 5208. The minimum rating is 30% for the major arm and 20% for the minor arm. No additional rating may be assigned separately for the same elbow joint.

Evidence that helps

Medical records confirming that a total prosthetic replacement of the elbow joint was performed, along with the date of surgery and date of hospital discharge, are central to establishing the starting point for the 100% rating period.

After that first year, records from VA or private medical exams that document the range of motion in your elbow, the presence and severity of pain during movement, and any measurable weakness in the affected arm help support a rating at the higher chronic-residuals level. Imaging, surgical notes, and physical therapy records can also reflect how the joint is functioning.

For intermediate levels of residual disability rated by analogy to codes 5205 through 5208, exam findings that precisely describe the degrees of motion available at the elbow are key. Statements from you or people who know you that describe how pain or weakness in the affected arm limits work tasks or daily activities can help show the practical impact of those findings.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
