7914
§ 4.119 Schedule of ratings—endocrine system.

Endocrine system cancer

Cancer affecting any part of the endocrine system, including the thyroid, parathyroid, or other hormone-producing glands.

What the rating means

VA rates malignant neoplasm of the endocrine system under Diagnostic Code 7914 at 100% while the cancer is active or being treated. This 100% rating continues beyond the end of any surgical procedure, X-ray, antineoplastic chemotherapy, or other therapeutic treatment.

Six months after treatment ends, VA requires a mandatory examination to determine the appropriate rating going forward. Any change to your evaluation after that exam is subject to the protections in 38 CFR § 3.105(e), which governs reductions in ratings.

If, at that later review, there has been no local recurrence of the cancer and no metastasis, VA will rate the condition based on whatever residual disabilities remain. Those residuals would be evaluated under whichever diagnostic code best fits the specific symptoms or impairments left behind.

Evidence that helps

While the cancer is active or treatment is ongoing, medical records confirming the diagnosis of a malignant neoplasm of the endocrine system are the foundation of the 100% rating. Pathology reports, biopsy results, imaging studies, and oncology treatment records showing surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy all document that the condition and its treatment are present.

For the mandatory examination that takes place six months after treatment ends, records showing whether the cancer has recurred locally or spread are critical. Imaging results, follow-up oncology notes, and lab work that address recurrence or metastasis directly speak to those criteria. If no recurrence or metastasis is found, records and personal statements describing any lasting symptoms or functional problems from the cancer or its treatment help establish what residual disabilities remain, since the rating would then shift to those residuals.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
