§ 4.116 Schedule of ratings—gynecological conditions and disorders of the breast.

Endometriosis

A condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing pain.

What the rating means

VA rates endometriosis under diagnostic code 7629. Three percentage levels are possible: 10%, 30%, and 50%. A diagnosis of endometriosis must be confirmed by laparoscopy before any rating can be assigned.

The 10% rating applies when pelvic pain or heavy or irregular bleeding requires continuous treatment to keep symptoms under control. The 30% rating applies when pelvic pain or heavy or irregular bleeding is not controlled even with treatment. The 50% rating applies when, in addition to pelvic pain or heavy or irregular bleeding not controlled by treatment, there are also lesions involving the bowel or bladder confirmed by laparoscopy and bowel or bladder symptoms.

VA also notes that loss or loss of use of a creative organ may entitle you to special monthly compensation under 38 CFR § 3.350, separate from the disability percentage. Natural menopause, primary amenorrhea, and pregnancy and childbirth are not considered disabilities for rating purposes, though chronic residuals of medical or surgical complications of pregnancy may be.

Evidence that helps

Because laparoscopy is required to confirm the diagnosis, a surgical or operative report documenting laparoscopic findings is essential at every rating level. Without it, VA cannot assign a rating under this code.

For the 10% level, medical records showing a treatment plan — such as hormone therapy, pain medication, or other ongoing care — and notes documenting that symptoms are being managed but require that continuous treatment would support this level. For the 30% level, records showing that pelvic pain or heavy or irregular bleeding continues despite treatment are relevant. This could include provider notes describing persistent symptoms, changes in medication, or failed treatment attempts. Your own statements describing how uncontrolled pain or bleeding affects your daily activities and work can help show the severity.

For the 50% level, in addition to the above, you would need laparoscopic findings specifically documenting lesions on the bowel or bladder, along with medical records or provider notes describing bowel or bladder symptoms such as painful urination, rectal pain, or gastrointestinal disruption tied to the endometriosis.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
