§ 4.97 Schedule of ratings—respiratory system.

Eosinophilic granuloma of lung

A condition where abnormal immune cells form nodules in the lungs that may cause breathing problems.

What the rating means

Eosinophilic granuloma of the lung is rated under the General Rating Formula for Interstitial Lung Disease, which covers diagnostic codes 6825 through 6833. VA measures how much the disease limits your lung function using specific test results and clinical findings.

A 100% rating applies if your Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) is less than 50% of the predicted value, your Diffusion Capacity (DLCO (SB)) is less than 40% of predicted, your maximum exercise capacity is less than 15 ml/kg/min oxygen consumption with cardiorespiratory limitation, or you have cor pulmonale, pulmonary hypertension, or require outpatient oxygen therapy. A 60% rating applies if your FVC is 50% to 64% of predicted, your DLCO (SB) is 40% to 55% of predicted, or your maximum exercise capacity is 15 to 20 ml/kg/min with cardiorespiratory limitation. A 30% rating applies if your FVC is 65% to 74% of predicted or your DLCO (SB) is 56% to 65% of predicted. A 10% rating applies if your FVC is 75% to 80% of predicted or your DLCO (SB) is 66% to 80% of predicted.

Evidence that helps

The evidence that matters most for this condition comes from pulmonary function testing. Records showing your FVC result as a percentage of the predicted value directly correspond to each rating level. Similarly, DLCO (SB) test results expressed as a percentage of predicted are used at every level from 10% up to 100%. If your condition is severe, records documenting maximum exercise capacity testing — showing oxygen consumption in ml/kg/min along with a finding of cardiorespiratory limitation — can support a 60% or 100% rating.

At the highest level, medical records confirming a diagnosis of cor pulmonale or pulmonary hypertension, or documentation that your treating provider has prescribed outpatient oxygen therapy, can also support a 100% rating. Statements from you or others who know you about how breathing difficulties affect your ability to work or carry out daily activities can give context to the test results, though the rating itself turns on the objective measurements listed above.
