6030
§ 4.79 Schedule of ratings—eye.

Eye focusing paralysis

Loss of the eye's ability to focus on near objects due to nerve damage.

What the rating means

VA rates paralysis of accommodation — the inability of the eye to adjust its focus due to neuropathy of the Oculomotor Nerve (cranial nerve III) — under diagnostic code 6030 in the schedule of ratings for eye conditions. There is one rating level for this condition: 20%. Because the regulation sets only a single rating, VA does not distinguish between levels of severity for this condition. If the paralysis of accommodation is confirmed as connected to your military service, the condition is rated at 20%.

Evidence that helps

Because this condition has only one rating level, evidence needs to establish that paralysis of accommodation is present and that it results from neuropathy of the Oculomotor Nerve (cranial nerve III). Medical records showing a diagnosis of third cranial nerve neuropathy, along with ophthalmologic or neurologic examination findings documenting loss of the eye's ability to focus, directly address those criteria. Imaging or nerve-function studies that confirm oculomotor nerve involvement can also be relevant. Statements from you or people who know you describing how difficulty focusing affects your work or daily activities can help show the condition's real-world impact, even though the regulation itself does not vary the rating based on functional impact.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
