5208
§ 4.71a Schedule of ratings—musculoskeletal system.

Forearm limited bending and straightening

Limited bending and straightening of the forearm at the elbow joint.

What the rating means

Diagnostic code 5208 covers limited bending (flexion) and straightening (extension) of the forearm. VA rates this condition based on how far you can bend and straighten your forearm at the elbow. The regulation sets one specific level: flexion limited to 100 degrees and extension limited to 45 degrees. Both your dominant arm (major) and your nondominant arm (minor) are rated at 20% under this code. Because there is only one defined rating level, VA does not assign a higher or lower percentage under this specific code based on greater or lesser restriction of motion. If your limitation of motion differs from what this code describes, VA may rate your condition under a different diagnostic code in the musculoskeletal schedule.

Evidence that helps

To support a rating under this code, medical evidence needs to show that your forearm flexion is limited to 100 degrees and your extension is limited to 45 degrees. Range-of-motion measurements recorded during a VA or private medical examination are central to this. A VA Compensation and Pension exam will typically use a goniometer to measure these angles, and those recorded degrees are what VA compares to the code's criteria. Repeated measurements matter because painful motion or fatigue can affect results. Medical records documenting your elbow or forearm condition over time help establish consistency. Statements from you or people who know you describing how restricted forearm movement affects tasks at work or at home — such as lifting, carrying, or reaching — can help VA understand the full impact of the limitation, though the measured degrees of motion are the deciding factor for the rating level itself.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
