8002
§ 4.124a Schedule of ratings—neurological conditions and convulsive disorders.

Glioblastoma

Aggressive malignant brain tumor (type of astrocytoma)

What the rating means

Glioblastoma is rated under diagnostic code 8002 as a malignant condition. VA assigns a 100% rating for an active malignancy. That 100% rating continues for 2 years after surgical, chemotherapeutic, or other treatment ends. Once 2 years have passed and your residuals have stabilized, VA re-evaluates your condition based on the neurological symptoms that remain.

After that transition, your rating is based on the specific neurological residuals you have, rated according to their symptomatology. A minimum rating of 30% applies. If you have residuals such as cognitive impairment, the rating looks at areas like memory, attention, concentration, executive functions, judgment, orientation, communication, social interaction, motor activity, visual spatial orientation, subjective symptoms, neurobehavioral effects, and consciousness. Each area is measured on its own scale from no impairment up to a total level of impairment, and the combined picture of all affected areas determines the final rating.

Evidence that helps

During the active malignancy and treatment phase, medical records confirming the diagnosis and documenting ongoing or recently completed surgical, chemotherapeutic, or other treatment are central to supporting the 100% rating.

After the 2-year post-treatment period, evidence needs to show the nature and severity of your remaining neurological symptoms. Neuropsychological test results are particularly important for areas like memory, attention, concentration, executive functions, judgment, and communication, because the criteria at higher levels require objective evidence of impairment on testing. Imaging, neurology notes, and rehabilitation records can document motor activity changes, orientation problems, or visual spatial difficulties. For subjective symptoms and neurobehavioral effects, records from treating providers and statements from you, family members, or caregivers describing how symptoms interfere with work, daily activities, and relationships help show how your residuals affect functioning day to day.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
