§ 4.117 Schedule of ratings—hemic and lymphatic systems.

Iron deficiency anemia

A condition where the body lacks enough iron to produce adequate red blood cells, causing fatigue and weakness.

What the rating means

VA rates iron deficiency anemia under diagnostic code 7720 in the hemic and lymphatic systems section of the rating schedule. The rating depends on how often you need intravenous iron infusions or whether you require continuous oral supplementation.

A 30% rating applies when your condition requires intravenous iron infusions four or more times within a 12-month period. A 10% rating applies when you require intravenous iron infusions at least once but fewer than four times within a 12-month period, or when you require continuous treatment with oral iron supplementation. A 0% rating applies when you have no symptoms or when your condition is managed only by changes to your diet.

One important limit applies here: if your iron deficiency anemia is caused by blood loss, VA does not rate it under this code. Instead, VA rates it under the diagnostic code for the condition that is causing the blood loss.

Evidence that helps

The evidence that matters most under this code is documentation of how your iron deficiency anemia is treated and how frequently that treatment occurs within a 12-month period.

For a 30% rating, medical records showing that you received intravenous iron infusions on four or more separate occasions within a 12-month period are central. For a 10% rating, records showing one to three intravenous infusions in a 12-month period, or prescriptions and pharmacy records confirming you are on continuous oral iron supplementation, directly support that level. For a 0% rating, records showing the condition is asymptomatic or controlled only through dietary changes reflect that tier.

Treatment notes from your doctor, infusion clinic records, prescription histories, and lab results showing ongoing iron deficiency all help establish the nature and frequency of treatment. Statements from you describing how your symptoms and treatment schedule affect your work and daily activities can also help VA understand the full picture of your condition.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
