§ 4.79 Schedule of ratings—eye.

Lagophthalmos (inability to close eyelid)

Inability to fully close one or both eyelids, which may leave part of the eye exposed.

What the rating means

VA rates lagophthalmos — the inability to fully close one or both eyelids — under diagnostic code 6022. There are two possible ratings. If both eyes are affected, the rating is 20%. If only one eye is affected, the rating is 10%. The regulation does not break these ratings down by severity or create intermediate levels; the only factor that separates one rating from the other is whether the condition is in one eye or both eyes.

Evidence that helps

To support a rating for lagophthalmos, medical records and eye examination findings are the most direct evidence. An ophthalmologist or other eye care provider documenting that you cannot fully close your eyelid — in one eye or both — directly ties to the criteria. Findings that specify which eye or eyes are affected are especially relevant, since that is what separates the 10% rating from the 20% rating. Records showing the condition is present in both eyes at the same time would support the bilateral rating. Statements from you or people who know you describing what you experience — such as eye dryness, irritation, or trouble sleeping because your eye stays open — can help show the condition is ongoing in the affected eye or eyes.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
