Partial or complete loss of the visible outer ear (pinna).
Medical records that describe the extent of tissue loss are central to this rating. A VA or private examiner's findings — documenting whether the auricle is completely absent or partially present, and estimating what fraction of the original structure remains — directly map to the criteria. Surgical reports, pathology records, or treatment notes showing removal of the auricle support a finding of complete loss. Photographs taken during a compensation and pension exam can help confirm whether deformity with loss of one-third or more of the substance is present. If both ears are affected, records must address each side separately, since the 50% rating requires complete loss of both. Statements from you or people who know you can describe visible changes, but the substance-loss fraction is a clinical determination that requires an examiner's assessment.
