5110
§ 4.71a Schedule of ratings—musculoskeletal system.

Loss of use of both feet

Complete loss of function in both feet without anatomical loss.

What the rating means

Loss of use of both feet is rated under diagnostic code 5110. There is one rating level: 100%. VA assigns this rating when you have loss of use of both feet, meaning the feet can no longer function in a way that allows effective use. Because there is only one rating level, the question is whether the condition meets the standard for loss of use — there are no intermediate percentages below 100% under this code.

This condition also connects to special monthly compensation. The regulation states that special monthly compensation is assignable during the 100% rating period from the earliest date permanent use of crutches is established. That is a separate benefit beyond the 100% disability rating itself, and VA applies it based on the evidence in your file.

Evidence that helps

Because there is only one rating level — 100% — the evidence needs to show that you have lost the use of both feet. Medical records documenting the nature and extent of the condition in both feet are central. Examination findings that describe your inability to use the feet effectively, such as notes on sensation, movement, strength, and weight-bearing capacity, directly support the criteria.

If you use crutches permanently, records or statements establishing the earliest date that permanent crutch use began are relevant to the special monthly compensation provision tied to this code. Statements from you or people who observe your daily life can help show the functional impact on walking and mobility. Treatment records, imaging, and any specialist evaluations that confirm the bilateral nature and severity of the condition all bear directly on whether loss of use of both feet is established.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
