5111
§ 4.71a Schedule of ratings—musculoskeletal system.

Loss of use of one hand and one foot

Complete loss of function in one hand and one foot without anatomical loss.

What the rating means

Diagnostic code 5111 covers loss of use of one hand and one foot together. There is one rating level: 100%. VA assigns this rating when you have lost the use of one hand and one foot at the same time, whether that loss is anatomical (the limb is gone) or functional (the limb remains but cannot be used). Because there is only one rating level under this code, VA does not weigh severity on a scale — the condition either meets the standard for loss of use of both a hand and a foot, or it does not. This code also ties into the rules for special monthly compensation. If the earliest date that permanent use of crutches is established falls during a 100 percent rating period assigned under a related prosthetic implant code, special monthly compensation may be assignable at that point.

Evidence that helps

To support a 100% rating under this code, the evidence needs to show that you have lost the use of one hand and one foot. For each limb, records documenting anatomical loss — such as surgical or amputation reports — directly establish that. Where the limb is physically present but nonfunctional, medical records and physical examination findings should show that the hand or foot cannot be used for any effective purpose. This includes physician notes, imaging, nerve-conduction studies, or other clinical findings that describe the degree of impairment. Statements from you or people who observe you daily can describe how the loss affects tasks such as gripping, bearing weight, walking, and self-care. If you use a prosthesis or crutches, records noting when permanent use began may also be relevant to any special monthly compensation determination connected to this rating.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
