§ 4.117 Schedule of ratings—hemic and lymphatic systems.

Lymphoma (Hodgkin's or non-Hodgkin's)

Cancer of lymphocytes in lymph nodes or lymphoid tissues

What the rating means

VA rates non-Hodgkin's lymphoma under Diagnostic Code 7715. The rating schedule also covers Hodgkin's lymphoma under this same framework. There is one assigned percentage under this code: 100%. You receive that rating when the disease is active, while you are going through any treatment phase, or if you have the indolent and non-contiguous phase of low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The 100% rating does not stop the moment treatment ends. It continues for the full two years after surgical therapy, radiation therapy, antineoplastic chemotherapy, or any other therapeutic procedure stops. After those two years, VA must schedule a mandatory examination to determine the appropriate rating going forward. Any reduction that follows that exam or a later exam is subject to the protections in 38 CFR § 3.105(e). If the disease has not come back by the time of that exam, VA will rate any remaining problems on their own terms under whichever diagnostic code fits those residual conditions.

Evidence that helps

To support a 100% rating while disease is active or during treatment, records that show a confirmed diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and documentation of ongoing or recent treatment are central. Oncology notes, pathology or biopsy reports, imaging studies such as PET or CT scans, and treatment records from a hematologist or oncologist all reflect active disease or an active treatment phase. For the indolent, non-contiguous low-grade variant, records that specifically identify the subtype and describe its current status are relevant.

After treatment ends, the two-year continuation period is supported by records showing the date treatment stopped. When the mandatory two-year exam occurs, imaging results, lab work, and physician notes reflecting whether there is any sign of recurrence become the key evidence. If residuals remain after the disease is in remission, records and statements describing those specific ongoing problems, including how they affect your daily functioning and work, would be relevant to rating under the applicable residual diagnostic code.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
