§ 4.88b Schedule of ratings—infectious diseases, immune disorders and nutritional deficiencies.

Maxillary sinus cancer

Malignant neoplasm of maxillary sinus

What the rating means

Melioidosis is rated under the General Rating Formula for Infectious Diseases. While the disease is active, VA rates it at 100%. Once the active disease has resolved, the infection itself is rated at 0%. However, if the infection leaves behind lasting damage — such as arthritis, lung lesions, or meningitis — VA rates those residual disabilities separately under whichever body system they affect.

The notes attached to this condition matter. VA requires that the initial diagnosis, and any relapse or return of active infection, be confirmed by a culture or other specific diagnostic laboratory test. If you have ongoing health problems after the infection clears, those are evaluated on their own terms within the appropriate body system, not under this diagnostic code.

Evidence that helps

For the 100% active-disease rating, the most important evidence is a confirmed laboratory finding — a positive culture or other specific diagnostic test — showing the infection is active or has relapsed. Treatment records, hospitalization records, and physician notes documenting signs and symptoms of active disease all support this level.

Once the active phase resolves, evidence shifts to whatever the infection left behind. Medical records documenting residual conditions — for example, imaging showing lung lesions, rheumatology records showing joint damage, or neurology records showing meningitis — would support ratings under those separate body systems. Statements from you or people who know you describing how lingering symptoms affect your work and daily activities can help show the severity of any residual disability. If your provider has tracked your recovery over time, those follow-up records are also relevant.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
