§ 4.88b Schedule of ratings—infectious diseases, immune disorders and nutritional deficiencies.

Miliary tuberculosis

A severe form of tuberculosis that spreads throughout the body via the bloodstream.

What the rating means

VA rates miliary tuberculosis under Diagnostic Code 6311. When the disease is active, it is rated at 100%. When the disease is inactive, VA does not assign a rating under this code directly. Instead, inactive disease is evaluated under §§ 4.88c and 4.89, which address inactive tuberculosis ratings. If the disease becomes active again after a period of inactivity, that recurrence must be confirmed by culture, histopathology, or other diagnostic laboratory testing before active-disease criteria apply again.

Beyond the active or inactive distinction, VA also rates any lasting damage the infection caused to your body under whichever body system that damage affects. Residual disabilities can include conditions of the skin, respiratory system, central nervous system, musculoskeletal system, eyes, gastrointestinal system, or genitourinary system, among others. Each of those residuals is rated separately under its own diagnostic code, not under Code 6311.

Evidence that helps

For the 100% active-disease rating, medical records documenting a current, confirmed diagnosis of active miliary tuberculosis are central. Laboratory results such as cultures or histopathology reports that identify active infection directly support this level. If you are being treated in a hospital or under close medical supervision, those treatment records also reflect active status.

For a recurrence after a period of inactivity, the regulation requires confirmation by culture, histopathology, or other diagnostic laboratory testing, so those specific test results are what VA needs to apply active-disease criteria again.

For residual disabilities rated under other body systems, the relevant evidence depends on which system is affected. Pulmonary residuals may be shown through imaging and breathing-function tests; neurological residuals through neurological exam findings; musculoskeletal residuals through range-of-motion measurements. Statements from you or people who know you describing how ongoing symptoms affect your work and daily activities can help show the severity of any residual condition.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
