§ 4.73 Schedule of ratings—muscle injuries.

Muscle hernia

A bulge where muscle tissue pushes through its surrounding sheath.

What the rating means

Muscle hernia is rated under diagnostic code 5326 in the VA's schedule of ratings for muscle injuries. The rating schedule names the condition "Muscle hernia, extensive, without other injury to the muscle," and it carries a single rating of 10%. Because only one rating level exists under this code, VA does not distinguish between varying degrees of severity the way it does for other muscle injury codes. If the hernia is accompanied by other injury to the muscle, VA may evaluate it under a different diagnostic code. For muscle injuries that result in loss of use of an entire extremity or loss of use of both buttocks, VA may also review whether you qualify for special monthly compensation under a separate regulation.

Evidence that helps

Because there is only one rating level under this code — 10% — the key evidence is what establishes that the hernia is extensive and that no other injury to the muscle is present. Medical records documenting the size and location of the hernia, along with a physician's description of it as extensive, would directly address the rating criteria. Imaging results or operative reports that show the scope of the herniation can support that finding. Records confirming the absence of additional muscle damage help place the condition under this specific code rather than a broader muscle-injury code. Statements from you or those who know you describing how the hernia affects your physical activities can add context, though the rating itself turns on the clinical findings rather than functional loss.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
