5021
§ 4.71a Schedule of ratings—musculoskeletal system.

Myositis (muscle inflammation)

Inflammation of muscle tissue that may cause pain, weakness, and swelling.

What the rating means

Myositis (diagnostic code 5021) does not have its own set of rating percentages in the VA schedule. Instead, VA rates it by analogy or under another diagnostic code that best fits your specific symptoms and limitations. The regulation text provided for this code covers prosthetic implants, joint resurfacing, and evaluation of digit ankylosis and limitation of motion — none of which contain a standalone rating formula for myositis itself. Because myositis is rated under a separate, applicable formula rather than a dedicated set of criteria, the percentage assigned will depend entirely on which condition or diagnostic code VA determines most closely matches the nature and severity of your muscle inflammation and the functional limits it causes.

Evidence that helps

Because myositis under diagnostic code 5021 is rated by reference to another condition's criteria, the evidence that helps your claim is evidence that captures the functional impact of your muscle inflammation as precisely as possible. Medical records documenting the diagnosis, treatment history, flare-up frequency, and any objective findings such as elevated muscle enzymes, imaging, or biopsy results establish the nature of the condition. Physical examination findings that measure strength, range of motion, and any loss of function in the affected muscles are directly relevant. Statements from you or people who know you describing how pain, weakness, or fatigue limit your ability to work, lift, walk, or carry out daily activities help show the real-world severity that objective tests alone may not fully capture.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
