6504
§ 4.97 Schedule of ratings—respiratory system.

Nose loss or scarring

Partial loss of nasal tissue or significant scarring of the nose.

What the rating means

VA rates loss of part of the nose, or scarring of the nose, under Diagnostic Code 6504. Two percentage levels are available based on how much of the nose is affected. A 30% rating applies when the loss or scarring exposes both nasal passages. A 10% rating applies when there is loss of part of one ala — the rounded outer side of a nostril — or another obvious disfigurement. VA may instead rate your condition under Diagnostic Code 7800, which covers disfiguring scars of the head, face, or neck. VA will apply whichever approach results in the rating that better reflects your condition.

Evidence that helps

Medical records documenting the extent of nose loss or scarring are central to this rating. For the 30% level, records or examination findings that show both nasal passages are exposed — such as a physician's description of the anatomy after surgery, injury, or disease — directly address that criterion. For the 10% level, records showing partial loss of one ala or photographs and clinical notes describing an obvious disfigurement support that rating. A VA or private examination that describes the exact area affected, the visibility of the deformity, and whether nasal passages are open to view is especially relevant. If your condition is also evaluated under Diagnostic Code 7800, the same photographs and clinical descriptions of scar size, color change, and tissue distortion would be relevant to that comparison.

Secondary conditions
