§ 4.71a Schedule of ratings—musculoskeletal system.

Other foot injuries

Various injuries to the foot not classified elsewhere, including fractures and deformities.

What the rating means

VA rates other foot injuries under diagnostic code 5284. There are three main rating levels: 10% for a moderate injury, 20% for a moderately severe injury, and 30% for a severe injury. The regulation also includes a separate provision: if your foot injury results in actual loss of use of the foot, the rating is 40%. Each step up in rating reflects a greater degree of injury and functional impact on the foot. Because the criteria use broad severity terms rather than specific measurements, the distinction between levels depends on the overall picture of your foot's condition and how much it limits function. No partial or intermediate percentages exist between these levels for this code.

Evidence that helps

To support a rating at any level, medical records documenting the nature and extent of your foot injury are central. Records from treating providers, including clinical notes, imaging results such as X-rays or MRIs, and surgical reports, help establish how serious the injury is. A VA compensation and pension examination that describes the current severity of your foot condition — including pain, weakness, instability, or structural damage — directly ties to the moderate, moderately severe, or severe distinctions. For the 40% level based on actual loss of use of the foot, exam findings would need to show that the foot cannot be used effectively, similar to an amputation. Statements from you or people who know you describing how your foot condition limits standing, walking, or other daily and work activities can help show the functional impact that separates one severity level from another.
