7352
§ 4.114 Schedule of ratings—digestive system.

Pancreas transplant

Surgical replacement of a diseased pancreas with a healthy donor pancreas.

What the rating means

VA rates a pancreas transplant under diagnostic code 7352. When you are admitted to the hospital for transplant surgery, VA assigns a 100% rating starting on that admission date. One year after you are discharged, VA requires a mandatory examination to determine what your rating should be going forward. The minimum rating after that examination is 30%, regardless of how well you are doing. If your rating changes based on that examination or any later one, VA must follow the procedural protections in 38 CFR § 3.105(e) before reducing it.

When you also have other digestive conditions rated under certain related diagnostic codes, VA does not add those ratings together. Instead, VA picks the single diagnostic code that best reflects the overall disability picture and assigns one rating under that code, raising it one level if the combined severity warrants it.

Evidence that helps

For the 100% rating from the date of hospital admission, records that document the admission date and the transplant surgery itself are central. Hospital admission records, operative reports, and discharge summaries directly establish when the rating period begins and ends.

One year after discharge, VA will schedule a mandatory examination to measure your ongoing condition. Medical records from that period showing how your body has responded to the transplant, any rejection episodes, immunosuppressant therapy, lab results reflecting organ function, and any complications will all bear on the rating assigned after that exam. Your own statements, and statements from family members or caregivers, describing how your symptoms affect daily activities and work can also help show the severity of your condition at the time of the examination. Because the minimum rating after the one-year mark is 30%, evidence that documents continued impairment from the transplant and its treatment is relevant to whether a rating above 30% is warranted.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
