§ 4.88b Schedule of ratings—infectious diseases, immune disorders and nutritional deficiencies.

Plague

A serious bacterial infection transmitted by fleas, causing fever, swollen lymph nodes, and severe illness.

What the rating means

Plague is rated under the General Rating Formula for Infectious Diseases. While the disease is active, it is rated at 100%. Once the active disease has resolved, the infection itself is rated at 0%. If the infection leaves behind lasting health problems, those residual disabilities are not rated under this diagnostic code. Instead, VA rates each one separately under whichever body system it affects. So the overall disability picture after recovery depends entirely on what residuals remain and how severe they are under their own applicable rating criteria.

Evidence that helps

For the 100% rating during active disease, medical records documenting a current, confirmed diagnosis of plague are central. Lab results, treatment records, and physician notes showing the infection is ongoing all speak directly to this level. Once active disease resolves, records showing the infection has cleared would support the 0% rating for the infection itself. For any residual disabilities, the evidence that matters shifts to whichever body system was affected. That could include imaging, pulmonary function tests, organ function labs, specialist evaluations, or your own statements describing how lasting symptoms affect your work and daily life. Connecting those records to a specific residual condition is what drives the rating after recovery.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
