§ 4.97 Schedule of ratings—respiratory system.

Pulmonary tuberculosis, active, far advanced

Active tuberculosis infection of the lungs with extensive disease spread.

What the rating means

VA rates active, far-advanced pulmonary tuberculosis under Diagnostic Code 6701 at 100%. There is only one rating level for this condition — if your tuberculosis meets the definition of chronic, active, and far advanced, VA assigns the full 100% rating. No lower percentages exist under this code. Because the rating schedule uses the word "chronic," the condition must be ongoing rather than resolved. If your tuberculosis is no longer active, VA would evaluate any remaining lung damage under a different diagnostic code for the residual effects of tuberculosis.

Evidence that helps

To support a 100% rating under this code, the evidence needs to show that your pulmonary tuberculosis is active and far advanced. Medical records confirming a current, active diagnosis are central to this — for example, positive sputum cultures or smears, chest imaging such as X-rays or CT scans showing extensive disease, and physician notes describing the stage and activity of the disease. Pulmonary function test results and radiology reports that document the extent of lung involvement help establish that the disease qualifies as far advanced. Statements from treating physicians describing the ongoing, active nature of your condition and its severity also support the criteria. Records showing the condition is chronic rather than a past episode are equally relevant.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
