§ 4.79 Schedule of ratings—eye.

Retina or macula disease

Disease or damage to the retina or macula that may affect central vision.

What the rating means

Retinopathy or maculopathy not otherwise specified is rated under the General Rating Formula for Diseases of the Eye. VA evaluates this condition in two ways and assigns whichever approach produces the higher rating: by the visual impairment the condition causes, or by incapacitating episodes you experience. For visual impairment, VA follows the rules in 38 CFR 4.75–4.78 and the diagnostic codes at 6061–6091 in § 4.79. For incapacitating episodes, VA counts how many treatment visits you made for the eye condition in the past 12 months. Seven or more visits yields 60%. At least 5 but fewer than 7 visits yields 40%. At least 3 but fewer than 5 visits yields 20%. At least 1 but fewer than 3 visits yields 10%. An incapacitating episode is one severe enough to require a clinic visit specifically for treatment, such as intravitreal or periocular injections, laser treatments, systemic immunosuppressants or biologic agents, or other surgical interventions.

Evidence that helps

To support a rating based on incapacitating episodes, records that clearly show the date of each clinic visit and confirm the visit was for treatment of your eye condition are central. Treatment notes, operative reports, injection logs, and pharmacy records documenting systemic immunosuppressants or biologic agents all help establish both the number of visits and the nature of the treatment within the past 12 months. To support a rating based on visual impairment, you would need evidence of reduced visual acuity or visual field loss measured through formal eye examinations, because VA uses specific acuity and field charts under 38 CFR 4.75–4.78. Statements from you or people who know you describing how your vision or treatment schedule affects your ability to work, drive, read, or carry out daily tasks can help show the overall impact of the condition. Because VA uses whichever method produces the higher rating, having complete records on both visual testing and treatment visits gives the fullest picture of your condition.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
