5155
§ 4.71a Schedule of ratings—musculoskeletal system.

Ring finger amputation

Amputation of the ring finger at any level.

What the rating means

Ring finger amputation is rated under diagnostic code 5155. There are two possible ratings, and what separates them is whether bone from the metacarpal — the long bone in the palm connected to the finger — was also removed.

If more than one-half of the metacarpal bone was resected along with the finger, the rating is 20%, regardless of whether it is your major or minor hand. If the amputation was at or above the proximal interphalangeal joint (the first knuckle up from the palm) but without that degree of metacarpal resection, the rating is 10%, again the same for either hand.

VA may also rate ring finger amputation under these same levels if ankylosis of both the metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints produces a condition equivalent to amputation, as described in the schedule's rules for digit ankylosis. If two or more digits of the same hand are affected together, VA assigns the level that best represents the overall disability.

Evidence that helps

To support a 20% rating, medical records and surgical operative reports would need to show that more than one-half of the metacarpal bone was removed along with the ring finger. A pathology or surgical report that describes the exact amount of bone resected is especially useful here, as is any post-operative imaging such as X-rays that show how much of the metacarpal remains.

To support a 10% rating, records should document that the amputation occurred at or above the proximal interphalangeal joint, with no significant metacarpal resection. Surgical notes, discharge summaries, and physical examination findings that describe the level of amputation serve this purpose.

For either level, statements from you or people who know you describing how the amputation affects your ability to grip, handle objects, or perform work tasks can help show the functional impact of the loss. If other digits of the same hand are also affected, records documenting those conditions together may influence how VA evaluates the overall hand disability.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
