§ 4.79 Schedule of ratings—eye.

Scleritis (eye wall inflammation)

Inflammation of the white outer wall of the eye.

What the rating means

Scleritis is rated under the General Rating Formula for Diseases of the Eye in § 4.79. VA evaluates it one of two ways — by the visual impairment the condition causes, or by incapacitating episodes — and uses whichever method produces the higher rating.

When rating by incapacitating episodes, VA looks at how many treatment visits for the eye condition you had in the past 12 months. Seven or more visits produces a 60% rating. At least five but fewer than seven visits produces a 40% rating. At least three but fewer than five visits produces a 20% rating. At least one but fewer than three visits produces a 10% rating. An incapacitating episode counts only when it is severe enough to require a clinic visit specifically for treatment, not just monitoring.

When rating by visual impairment, VA applies the separate formulas found in 38 CFR 4.75 through 4.78 and diagnostic codes 6061 through 6091 of § 4.79, which measure losses in visual acuity, field of vision, or muscle function.

Evidence that helps

To support a rating based on incapacitating episodes, medical records that document each clinic visit specifically for treatment of your scleritis are central. The records should show the date, the treatment provided, and that the visit was for active treatment rather than routine follow-up. Examples of treatments that count include systemic immunosuppressants or biologic agents, intravitreal or periocular injections, laser treatments, and other surgical interventions. A count of qualifying visits across the 12 months before your exam gives VA the number it needs to assign a rating tier.

To support a rating based on visual impairment, you would need eye examination findings that measure visual acuity, visual fields, or muscle function, since those are the factors used under diagnostic codes 6061 through 6091.

Your own statements, and statements from people who know you, describing how flare-ups have affected your ability to work or carry out daily activities can help show the frequency and severity of episodes, supporting what the medical records reflect.
