§ 4.104 Schedule of ratings—cardiovascular system.

Soft tissue sarcoma of blood vessels

A cancer arising from the soft tissues of blood vessels, including arteries, veins, or lymphatic vessels.

What the rating means

Soft tissue sarcoma of vascular origin is rated under diagnostic code 7123 in the cardiovascular system section of the VA rating schedule. VA assigns a 100 percent rating for this condition. That rating does not stop when your surgical treatment, X-ray therapy, antineoplastic chemotherapy, or other therapeutic procedure ends. It continues beyond the cessation of any such treatment. Six months after treatment has stopped, VA will schedule a mandatory examination to determine the appropriate rating going forward. Any change to your rating after that examination is subject to the provisions of § 3.105(e). If the examination shows no local recurrence of the sarcoma and no metastasis, VA will then rate you based on whatever residual disabilities remain from the condition or its treatment.

Evidence that helps

While you are undergoing treatment, the 100 percent rating is established by records confirming the diagnosis and documenting active surgical, radiation, chemotherapy, or other therapeutic procedures. Records from your treating oncologist, surgeon, or other specialists that show the dates treatment began and ended are central to that period of evaluation. After treatment ends, the mandatory VA examination at the six-month mark will look for evidence of local recurrence or metastasis. Imaging studies, pathology reports, and oncology follow-up notes that confirm no recurrence or spread would support a transition to rating on residuals. At that point, medical records and your own statements describing any lasting effects on your ability to work and carry out daily activities become relevant to showing what residual disabilities are present.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
