§ 4.124a Schedule of ratings—neurological conditions and convulsive disorders.

Sydenham's chorea

A movement disorder causing involuntary, jerky movements, often following streptococcal infection.

What the rating means

Sydenham's chorea is rated under diagnostic code 8105 in the schedule of ratings for neurological conditions and convulsive disorders. The possible ratings are 10%, 30%, 50%, 80%, and 100%. The levels move from mild at 10%, to moderate at 30%, to moderately severe at 50%, to severe at 80%, and finally to pronounced, progressive grave types at 100%. Each step up reflects a greater degree of severity of the condition. The regulation also directs VA to consider any rheumatic cause and related complications when evaluating your condition, so those factors are part of how your case is assessed overall.

Evidence that helps

To support a rating at any level, medical records that document how your Sydenham's chorea presents and how it has changed over time are central. For the lower levels, records showing mild or moderate involuntary movements and their effect on daily tasks would be relevant. For the higher levels of 80% or 100%, records showing severe or progressively worsening symptoms, including how the condition affects your ability to function, carry weight. Because the regulation directs VA to consider rheumatic cause and complications, records linking the chorea to a rheumatic condition such as rheumatic fever, and any records of related heart or joint complications, are also relevant. Statements from you or people who know you describing how symptoms affect your work and daily activities can help show the functional impact at each level.

Secondary conditions
