6025
§ 4.79 Schedule of ratings—eye.

Tear duct disorders (excessive tearing, infection)

Problems with the tear ducts or glands that may cause excessive tearing or infection.

What the rating means

VA rates disorders of the lacrimal apparatus — such as epiphora (excessive tearing) or dacryocystitis (tear sac infection) — under Diagnostic Code 6025 in the schedule of ratings for eye conditions. Two ratings are possible: 20 percent when the condition affects both eyes, and 10 percent when only one eye is affected. The regulation does not set out symptom thresholds or severity levels within each rating; the determining factor is simply whether the disorder is present in one eye or both. If your condition changes from one eye to both, the rating would change accordingly.

Evidence that helps

To support a 10 percent rating, medical records would need to show a diagnosed lacrimal apparatus disorder — such as epiphora or dacryocystitis — affecting one eye. To support a 20 percent rating, the records would need to show the disorder affects both eyes. Useful evidence includes ophthalmology or optometry records documenting the diagnosis, examination findings describing tearing or signs of infection or obstruction, imaging or procedural notes related to the tear ducts, and treatment records. Statements from you or people who know you describing how the condition affects your daily activities — such as blurred vision from tearing or recurring eye infections — can help establish the ongoing presence of the disorder in one or both eyes.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
