Amputation of three or more toes without involvement of the metatarsal bones.
To support a rating at the 20% level, medical records need to show that the amputation involved three or more toes and that the great toe was among them, all without metatarsal involvement. To support the 10% level, records need to show that three or more toes were amputated but that the great toe was not one of them, again without metatarsal involvement. Operative reports, pathology records, and imaging such as X-rays are the most direct way to document exactly which toes were removed and whether the metatarsal bones remained intact. A VA or private examination that clearly identifies the affected toes and confirms the absence of metatarsal involvement also helps. Statements from you or people who know you describing how the amputation affects walking, balance, or daily activities can add context, though the specific rating level turns on the documented anatomy of the amputation itself.
