7905
§ 4.119 Schedule of ratings—endocrine system.

Underactive parathyroid

A condition where the parathyroid glands produce too little hormone, causing low blood calcium levels.

What the rating means

VA rates hypoparathyroidism under diagnostic code 7905. For the first three months after your initial diagnosis, the condition is rated at 100%. After that three-month period, VA does not continue to rate hypoparathyroidism as a single condition. Instead, VA evaluates whatever chronic residuals remain — such as kidney stones (nephrolithiasis), cataracts, decreased kidney function, or congestive heart failure — each under its own separate diagnostic code in the rating schedule. In plain terms, the long-term rating you receive depends entirely on which lasting complications you have developed and how severe each one is, not on the hypoparathyroidism diagnosis itself.

Evidence that helps

During the first three months after diagnosis, medical records confirming the initial diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism are the core evidence for the 100% rating. After that period, the evidence that matters is whatever documents your chronic residuals. For kidney stones, imaging studies and treatment records are relevant. For cataracts, ophthalmology examination findings matter. For decreased kidney function, lab results such as creatinine levels and glomerular filtration rate reports are pertinent. For congestive heart failure, cardiology records and functional assessments are relevant. Statements from you or people who know you describing how these complications affect your work and daily life can also support the picture the medical records show.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
