§ 4.115b Ratings of the genitourinary system—diagnoses.

Varicocele or hydrocele

Swelling in the scrotum caused by enlarged veins or fluid buildup around the testicle.

What the rating means

VA rates varicocele and hydrocele together under diagnostic code 7543. The regulation assigns a single rating of 0% for this condition. There are no higher rating levels provided for this diagnostic code.

A 0% rating means VA recognizes the condition as service-connected, even though no additional compensation is paid based on the rating percentage alone. You may still be entitled to other VA benefits tied to a service-connected condition at 0%.

The regulation also directs VA to consider whether your condition involves the loss or loss of use of one or more creative organs. If it does, you may be entitled to special monthly compensation under a separate provision. That determination is made by VA when evaluating your claim.

Evidence that helps

Because the only rating available under this diagnostic code is 0%, evidence that establishes a service connection for your varicocele or hydrocele is the primary focus. Medical records confirming the diagnosis — such as physical examination notes or imaging results — help show the condition exists and is documented.

If your condition involves the loss or loss of use of a creative organ, records that speak to that specifically would be relevant to a possible special monthly compensation determination. A physician's statement describing the nature and extent of your condition, including any effect on organ function, supports that part of the evaluation.

Statements from you describing how the condition affects your daily life may also be part of your file, though the rating criteria for this code do not set symptom thresholds that would change the percentage assigned.

Secondary conditions

Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
