Alabama G.I. Dependent Scholarship Program

Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA)
$400 per credit hour plus up to $1,000 per semester for textbooks and fees

Alabama pays for undergraduate study for the dependents of resident disabled veterans. The scholarship covers $400 per credit hour plus up to $1,000 a semester for textbooks and fees at eligible schools, at the in-state tuition rate. Children and stepchildren get five academic years. Spouses and unremarried surviving spouses get five academic years if the veteran is 100 percent permanently and totally disabled, or three academic years if the veteran is rated 40 to 90 percent.

Apply through the ADVA online application for the G.I. Dependent Scholarship Program. For help, contact your nearest ADVA veterans service office or email adva.accounthelp@va.alabama.gov.

What you'll need

The veteran’s discharge paperwork and VA rating documentation, proof of the veteran’s Alabama residency history, proof of your relationship to the veteran, a completed FAFSA for each academic year, and a signed FERPA release for your school.

Eligibility

  • You are an Alabama resident
  • You are the child, stepchild, spouse or unremarried surviving spouse of an eligible veteran
  • The veteran was honorably discharged after at least 90 days of continuous active duty, or after less than 90 days because of a service-connected disability
  • The veteran has a VA disability rating of 40 percent or more, was a prisoner of war, was declared missing in action, died from a service-connected disability, or died in the line of duty on active duty
  • The veteran meets the Alabama residency requirements for the program
  • You complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid for each academic year
  • You demonstrate satisfactory academic progress
  • You complete a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act release for your school
