The Uniform Veterans Guardianship Act lets Alabama courts appoint a guardian for veterans and their minor dependents who are mentally or physically incapacitated. The law sets out how a guardian is appointed, their duties, responsibilities and limits, and the costs and fees involved.

Petition the probate court in the county where the veteran lives to have a guardian appointed.

What you'll need

Medical documentation of the incapacity, the veteran’s VA benefit information, and proof of your relationship to the veteran.

Eligibility

  • The veteran or their minor dependent is mentally or physically incapacitated
  • A petition for guardianship is filed with the Alabama probate court
