Alabama Homestead Property Tax Exemption for Residents Over 65, Blind or Totally Disabled

Local Alabama county tax office (revenue commissioner or tax assessor)
Full exemption from state, county and city property taxes on your home and up to 160 acres

Alabama exempts your home from all state, county and city property taxes if you are over 65 with an adjusted gross income under $12,000, or if you have a total and permanent disability at any age or income. The exemption covers the single-family home you live in and up to 160 acres of the land it sits on.

How to apply

Apply through the county office of the Alabama Department of Revenue where the property is located, not the state. Ask them to confirm the filing deadline for your county.

What you'll need

Proof of age or documentation of your total and permanent disability, proof that you own the home and live in it as your primary residence, and your income information if you are claiming the over-65 exemption.

Eligibility

  • You are an Alabama resident
  • You own the home and occupy it as your primary residence on the first day of the tax year
  • You are over age 65 with an adjusted gross income under $12,000, or you have a total and permanent disability regardless of age or income
