$100,000 death benefit

Alabama pays a $100,000 death benefit to the survivors of an Alabama National Guard member killed while serving on state active duty. The benefit also covers a death within three years afterward from causes related to that state active duty. It does not apply to deaths on federal active duty.

How to apply

Survivors should contact the Alabama National Guard and the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs to file for the death benefit.

What you'll need

The service member’s state active duty orders, the death certificate, a line of duty determination, and proof of your relationship to the service member.

Eligibility

  • You are a survivor of an Alabama National Guard service member
  • The service member was killed while serving on state active duty, or died within three years afterward from causes related to that state active duty
  • The death did not occur while serving on federal active duty
