Alabama State Employee Veterans’ Hiring Preference

Alabama State Personnel Department
5 or 10 points added to passing exam scores, plus retention preference in a reduction in force

Alabama adds points to your passing state employment exam score. Honorably discharged veterans get 5 points. Veterans receiving VA disability compensation get 10 points, as do spouses of disabled veterans who cannot work because of the disability, and surviving spouses of service members killed in the line of duty. During a reduction in force, employees with veterans preference are the last to be discharged, demoted or have their pay cut, as long as their record is good and their efficiency rating is at least equal to the other employees in competition.
