Affordable long term nursing and assisted living care at five state homes

Alabama runs five state veterans homes providing affordable long term care: Bill Nichols in Alexander City, Floyd E. "Tut" Fann in Huntsville, William F. Green in Bay Minette, Colonel Robert L. Howard in Pell City, and Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins in Enterprise. They provide 24-hour nursing coverage, a physician on call around the clock, physical, occupational and speech therapy, pharmacy services, activity programs, dietary services and social services.

How to apply

Complete the Alabama State Veterans Home information and application packet and submit it to the home you want. For help, call the state veterans home director at 334-242-5077.

What you'll need

Your DD214, a physician’s medical examination, documentation that you meet VA requirements for skilled nursing or assisted living care, and proof you have lived in Alabama for the 12 months before applying.

Eligibility

  • You have been an Alabama resident for the 12 months before applying
  • You served at least 90 days on active duty and received an honorable discharge, or if you enlisted after September 7, 1980 or were commissioned after October 16, 1981, you served at least 24 continuous months or your full service obligation and received an honorable discharge
  • You meet VA requirements for skilled nursing care or domiciliary and assisted living care
  • A physician examination shows the home can meet your care needs, you have no behavioral traits considered dangerous, and no mental health diagnosis that outweighs your medical condition
  • You meet Alabama immigration law requirements
