No cost burial for veterans; $375 for a dependent burial

The Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort provides burial for veterans and their eligible family members, with in-ground casket and cremation burials, columbarium niches and a scattering garden. For veterans there is no cost for the burial plot or niche, opening and closing the grave, perpetual care, an inscribed gravestone, and use of the committal shelter. Burial of a dependent costs $375 plus the other funeral expenses your family or estate pays.

Complete the pre-registration application to establish eligibility before there is a need, and mail, fax or email it with the supporting documents to the cemetery at 34904 Alabama Highway 225, Spanish Fort AL 36527. What you'll need

Your DD214 or other discharge paperwork, proof of Alabama residency, and a marriage certificate or dependent documentation for family members.

Eligibility

  • You were discharged from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable, died while serving on active duty, served at least 20 years in the National Guard or Reserves and qualified for military retired pay, or were a reserve component member activated for federal service
  • You are an Alabama resident at the time of death, at the time you entered the U.S. Armed Forces, or for 10 years which need not be consecutive
  • Spouses and dependents qualify through the veteran, with dependent children limited to unmarried children under 21, under 23 if a full-time student, or a child who developed a lifelong disability before age 21
