Alaska gives you a preference when hiring for state public employment. Where a numerical rating system is used, veterans and National Guard members get 5 percent of the total points available added to their score, and disabled veterans and former prisoners of war get 10 percent. A spouse of an eligible veteran or reserve component member gets 5 percent, and the unremarried surviving spouse or child of an eligible disabled veteran or former prisoner of war gets 10 percent. Where numerical ratings are not used, a veteran or Guard member gets consideration and a disabled veteran or former prisoner of war gets an interview. You have to meet the minimum qualifications for the position either way.
Claim the preference when you apply for a State of Alaska position and submit your supporting documents. The Alaska Office of Veterans Affairs veteran preference page explains what counts.
Your DD214 or NGB22, plus your VA disability documentation, prisoner of war documentation, marriage certificate or casualty documentation depending on which preference you are claiming.
