Alaska Veteran Death Gratuity

$750 death gratuity

Alaska pays a $750 death gratuity to the surviving spouse of a veteran who was buried on or after May 13, 1984, or who died on or after September 19, 1990. If there is no surviving spouse, it is paid to the veteran’s personal representative.

Contact the Alaska Office of Veterans Affairs at 907-334-0874 or 888-248-3682 to claim the gratuity.

What you'll need

The veteran’s discharge paperwork, the death certificate, proof of the veteran’s Alaska residency, and your marriage certificate or proof that you are the personal representative.

Eligibility

  • The veteran was buried on or after May 13, 1984, or died on or after September 19, 1990
  • The veteran received an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions from an active or reserve component, or served in the Alaska Territorial Guard
  • The veteran lived in Alaska for at least one year before entering the U.S. Armed Forces and returned to Alaska within one year of discharge, or lived in Alaska for at least one year before death
  • You are the surviving spouse, or the personal representative of the veteran if there is no surviving spouse
