California Military Department GI Bill Award Program

California Military Department (California National Guard), with the California Student Aid Commission
Up to 100 percent of tuition and fees

If you serve in the California National Guard, the California Military Department GI Bill pays up to 100 percent of your tuition and fees at a California college system campus or a participating private grant-eligible school. You can use it for one degree at bachelor, graduate or doctoral level, or for a certificate or diploma you do not already hold.

How to apply

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid first, then submit the California Military Department GI Bill online application. For help, call the California National Guard Civilian Education Branch at 866-338-2863 or email cmd.gi.bill@cmd.ca.gov.

What you'll need

A completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid, proof you have been a California resident for tuition purposes for at least a year, proof you are actively serving in the California National Guard, and your school enrollment information.

Eligibility

  • You have been a California resident for tuition purposes for at least one year before applying
  • You are actively serving in the California National Guard while receiving the funds
  • You are enrolled in at least three academic units per term
  • You keep a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0
  • You agree to serve two more years in the California National Guard after your last term using the funds
